Is Anyone Else Bored?

Most of the time, I enjoy my job. But after spending a good 9 hours tagging a trial balance to a P+L, I gotta say, a lot of this work is pretty damn boring. Anyone else bored at work? I try keeping a positive mindset, telling myself that it will all be worth it in the end. But sometimes, it really makes you wonder why you’re doing this. How do you get through it? Let me know!

You remind me how glad I am to work in the IT audit group – ticking and tying is so rare, at least half my friends don’t even know what it is. πŸ™‚

I have spent time doing financial audit work as part of my CA requirement, and one of the keys is to get a soft copy of the materials whenever you can. Why tick and tie a print-out of a couple of spreadsheets, when you can run a VLOOKUP command on the two and finish an 8 hour job in 10 minutes? πŸ™‚

[I know, I know, sometimes it’s not that easy for various reasons, but I’ve had some remarkable success in that area.]

Similarily, the ancient concept of “footing” a schedule (non-accountants: it means adding up all the numbers in a column or row to make sure they’re added up correctly) is ridiculously easy if you just run SUM(A1:A20923483298457345) instead of punching all those numbers into your calculator.

Of course, sometimes you’ll be stuck doing the old pencil-pushing thing. In that case I hope you loaded a bunch of mp3’s on your laptop and brought headphones – or simply have an mp3 player with you to begin with. And hopefully if you’re working with other people they don’t care that you have headphones on. πŸ™‚

At least you have some work to do. My Friday consisted of checking my email, reading the newspaper, listening to mp3’s, going to lunch, and taking part in a fantasy basketball draft.

I’m bored with the lack of updates. You don’t have five minutes to write a quick post? I need to read of others pain…I am sure you have much pain to share….comon! War stories damn-it. πŸ™‚

I think I’m probably more bored than you! We have a 55 hour minimum requirement right now. I just started in January so most of the work I do just frustrates the hell out of me. 11 hours per day of the most boring yet frustrating work ever…

Yes, I’m whining. But isn’t that what you wanted? πŸ˜›

I’m bored as all hell man….Honestly I just have a hard time sitting still and concentrating on this shit sometimes….

What makes accounting tough oftentimes is that it’s boring (tedious mostly) AND can also be very difficult……..oh well!

  15. I get through the mundane by thinking about my pension at the end of it all and frequent holidays in the sun! Another tactic I use is to think this work won’t be forever, before long I’ll be instructing someone else to complete the work as I keep climbing the ladder.

I can’t get through it. I’m so bored I miss waitressing! at least you could have a laugh with the customers and you were so busy on your feet you didn’t have time to get bored! I think I might have just wasted years of my life and thousands of pounds studying accounts 😦
At least if something is easy and boring you can still do it. When it’s difficult and boring… you end up on the net posting about how bored you are!
